Our Curriculum
At Fitzmaurice Primary School, pupils benefit from a broad, rich and exciting curriculum that develops both knowledge and skills. Our curriculum is carefully designed to be relevant to children’s interests, inspire enjoyment, nurture creativity and independence, and challenge every learner to achieve their full potential. We strive to provide engaging learning opportunities that appeal to and motivate all children.
One of the strengths of our curriculum is the exceptional range of experiences we offer beyond the classroom. Through special events, educational visits, visitors, extracurricular activities and strong community links, children are given opportunities to enrich and extend their learning in meaningful and memorable ways. Previous highlights have included Science Week, visits to We The Curious, The Roman Baths, Westonbirt, Lyme Regis and London, where pupils enjoyed seeing The Lion King. Children also participate in the West Wiltshire Dance Festival and residential visits to Charterhouse and Plas Pencelli.
A visit to any classroom at Fitzmaurice will reveal engaging, purposeful learning experiences that foster curiosity, confidence, independence and critical thinking. Learning environments throughout the school, from Reception to Year 6, are stimulating and designed to support high-quality learning. Throughout the year, pupils enjoy a wide variety of educational visits, inspiring visitors, community projects and opportunities to collaborate with children across different year groups.
During teachers’ planning, preparation and assessment (PPA) time, pupils take part in a range of specialist-led enrichment activities, including Forest School, swimming, physical education and music. In Key Stage 2, all children learn to play the ukulele and develop their singing skills as part of the music curriculum. Pupils who learn musical instruments are regularly given opportunities to showcase their talents through performances and special assemblies.
We are also proud to offer a wide range of extracurricular clubs before and after school. These vary throughout the year and include both free and paid activities. Popular clubs have included Art, Netball, Active Club and Choir. Our sports teams consistently achieve success and provide pupils with valuable opportunities to develop teamwork, resilience and confidence.
