Term 2
Back
As we come to the end of a wonderful term, we want to celebrate the incredible effort and joy that has filled our classrooms. The highlight for Reception and Key Stage 1 has undoubtedly been the Nativity performances – the children shone brightly, and their enthusiasm was truly magical. A huge thank you to all parents for your support with costumes and preparations; your help makes these special moments possible. We are so proud of everything the children have achieved this term and look forward to more exciting learning in the new year. Wishing you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas!
What have we been learning in Term 2?
Reception & Key Stage 1
We have had so much fun in Swift and Wagtail this term! We explored Forest School for clues and discovered the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have enjoyed telling the story using our bear voices! We have made so much progress in our reading and are beginning to spell simple words. We have explored numbers to 5 and have enjoyed finding all the different ways to arrange 5 objects. We have been amazing at performing our Nativity play. We have loved exploring our understanding of the world in our outdoor area, including creating roadworks when a hole in the road appeared (more Bradford traffic chaos!). Year 1s have also had a very exciting term - the children chose their favourite animals after reading ‘The Most Important Animal of all.’ This led to some wonderful writing and some even more amazing homework projects! In Geography the children have been using maps to locate features of our local area, and they have even had a go at drawing their own map of the school grounds. We have also been really busy learning the songs for the Key Stage 1 Nativity play which the children enjoyed performing.
This term in Falcon & Blackbird has been full of exciting learning experiences. The children have written their own non-chronological reports about animals, using key facts and clear organisation to share their knowledge. In geography, they explored maps and map symbols, then applied their understanding by creating maps of the school using their own symbols to represent features around the grounds. PE lessons focused on developing ball skills, improving control and coordination. In art, the children experimented with lines and shapes to produce vibrant Paul Klee-inspired portraits. The highlight of the term, however, has been the wonderful nativity performance. The children have dedicated themselves to learning lines, songs and actions, rehearsing with enthusiasm and growing confidence each day. Their hard work has culminated in a truly magical performance - an extravaganza that showcased not only their talents but also their teamwork, and festive spirit.
Year 3 & 4 - A Magical Term with How to Train Your Dragon
This term, Year 3 and 4 have been fully immersed in the world of Vikings, dragons, and daring adventures through our class text, How to Train Your Dragon. The story has sparked imagination, inspired creativity, and supported rich learning across the curriculum.
Our writing focus began with creating detailed character descriptions. The children explored how authors use powerful vocabulary, vivid imagery, and personality traits to build memorable characters. They then applied these skills to describe their own dragons from the story - producing imaginative, descriptive writing full of atmosphere. To complement their writing, the children designed their own clay dragon eyes. They considered scales, cracks, and eye shape, using tools to add realistic details. The finished pieces look wonderfully fierce and mysterious.
The children used their problem-solving skills to design and make a dragon trap. They thought carefully about how their traps would work, what materials they would need.
In Geography, we investigated different types of settlements, villages, towns, and cities. The children studied our own local area and created a tourist map of Bradford on Avon. Their final maps were beautifully organised and showed a strong understanding of local geography.
We are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and the high-quality work they have produced this term. Well done, Year 3 and 4!
Year 5 & 6
Term 2 has certainly been a frosty one, with our learning focused on the fascinating Alps! The children have been fully immersed in their geography topic, exploring what life is like in this unique mountain environment. This linked brilliantly with our English unit, How to Survive Anywhere, where pupils produced detailed information texts about an extreme environment of their choice. In Design and Technology, the children put their creativity skills to the test by designing and building their very own playground structures. Our science lessons explored how animals and humans grow and change over time, while in art we took inspiration from street artists to create our own environmentally themed street art. In maths, the children successfully tackled adding and subtracting fractions before moving on to multiplication and long division. A highlight of the term was taking part in the first ever live assembly from Antarctica, where we heard from Robert Swan: the first person in history to walk to both the North and South Poles!
