Fitzmaurice School Council continues to go from strength to strength. Over the past couple of years, the Council has worked hard to represent the voice of Fitzmaurice pupils and to help make a positive difference to Fitzmaurice. Highlights include:

  • New benches and tables outside
  • Launching the Happy Carrot tuckshop
  • Anti-bullying campaign and policy
  • New play equipment

Our focus this year is on helping to develop the grounds, to develop our understanding of learning and to promote community links. Current work includes:

  • Launch of the School Council on the website
  • Meeting up with Christchurch School Council to positively promote the ‘Bradford’ child
  • Becoming learning detectives in classrooms at school to investigate how we are learning and how we can help to improve it
  • Having our own School Council day to raise money for each class to have their own planting area

Fitzmaurice and Christchurch joint Council meeting

On 16th March 2009, Miss Dawkins arranged for Fitzmaurice and Christchurch Primary (the other primary school in Bradford on Avon) School Council members to meet up at the Bradford-on-Avon Council Offices, to discuss ways to improve the Bradford-on-Avon primary school communities and to promote working together.

To start the meeting, we got into small groups from both schools to tell each other about ourselves. Then we had a brief meeting with the Mayor of Bradford-on-Avon, who told us how the council was run. Next, we got into bigger mixed groups and brainstormed ideas to bring the two schools together in collaborative projects. We came up with some great ideas such as a two school picnic on Victory Field, litter picking around the town and fundraising for new bins, or joining together to attempt a Guinness World Record.

The meeting closed by sharing our ideas and having a group photo taken on the bridge outside the council offices.

We look forward to our next meeting together.
