Community
Fitzmaurice Primary School has a number of initiatives aimed at helping the wider community. Details of some of these can be found below.
Governors
As a community school, a number of our governors are from the local community and fulfil their role of holding the school to account and acting as a “critical friend”. See the dedicated Governors section for more information.
Children’s Centre
Bradford on Avon’s Children’s Centre is located on Fitzmaurice’s site. The centre serves the town itself and several of the outlying villages, providing services both on site and via outreach.
The new building, which opened in June 2008, comprises The Children’s Centre at the front of the building and Tiddlywinks Nursery, which occupies the remaining 80% of the building.
- Some of Year 5 and 6 represented the school in planting 25 trees at Barton Farm as part of the town’s drive to be more climate friendly.
- The St Laurence Street Party has become an annual event in which many local groups, including Fitzmaurice School, take part.
- For Christmas 2008 Fitzmaurice opened its gates to the community so that everyone could enjoy a festive skating experience, organised by Fitzmaurice School Association. Two locally raised reindeer made a guest appearance at the event (kindly sponsored by Bauder)
- Bradford-on-Avon Arts Festival is held annually in September. In 2009 our Y2 and Y6 pupils sang and played samba drums as they paraded through the town. Our Y6 group, Electric Streak won second place in “Bradford’s Got Talent”.

Extra Curricular Activities
In addition to our own in-house run clubs, other organisations lease our premises in order to run clubs for the community:
Morphew Dance School (Mondays, 3.30 – 8.00pm), info@morphewschoolofdance.co.uk or telephone Gill Dobroczynski on 01225 752847.
Tae Kwon-do (Tuesdays and Thursdays 6.00 – 8.00pm), telephone Mr Geoff Cornell on 01225 735334.
Extended Services
As part of the Bradford on Avon cluster, our extended services are co-ordinated at our local secondary school, St Laurence, by Trudi Cox. The team consists of the co-ordinator, a community school nurse and 2 parent support advisers (1 primary and 1 secondary). Jemma Clarke, the primary parent support advisor, attended a recent open afternoon to explain this new role to parents.
Climate Friendly Bradford
As part of our Eco Schools initiative, we have worked in partnership with Climate Friendly Bradford. We are going to benefit shortly from a grant towards the cost of improving the school’s roof insulation.
CFB is committed to Bradford on Avon being carbon-neutral by 2050. It’s a long way off, but Fitzmaurice has signed up to the commitment.
